Our sister site Drinkhacker reviewed Mountjoy’s CBD-infused sparkling waters twice, once in 2018 and once in 2019. Recently the company added some new flavors to its lineup, so we’re taking the chance to give the line Weedhacker’s first look at the current product line, six flavors in all.
The Sonoma, California-based Mountjoy also took the time to point us to its response over recent allegations from Leafly that its testing showed that its product had no actual CBD in it. I’ll let you the reader delve into the minutiae here, but Mountjoy’s position is that lab testing needs to be done on concentrate, not finished product, and that the CBD in actual bottles can be quite variable.
Here’s a look at six current Mountjoy flavors (all but the unflavored version) — all zero calories, naturally flavored, and dosed with 10mg of CBD per 16 oz bottle. I will say the calming effect of the CBD is less immediately evident throughout the lineup, and do note that regardless of the flavor, at a hefty $5 per bottle, you’re paying pretty handsomely per mg of CBD. Time to up the dosage on these, perhaps?
Mountjoy Peach CBD Sparkling Water – The peach flavor is very mild and not inauthentic, with a gentle terpene note visible underneath the light fruit character. It’s much cleaner than the 2018 expression of the beverage and quite soothing on the whole, making it one of my favorites in the lineup. Rating: 8/10
Mountjoy Orange CBD Sparkling Water – Surprisingly bitter, with a candied orange peel kick on the back end. Fairly harmless and understated, with a gentle but unremarkable finish. Rating: 6/10
Mountjoy Blackberry CBD Sparkling Water – Mild and inoffensive, it features a solid core of berry notes, though they could as easily be blueberry as blackberry as they hit the tongue. Virtually none of the fruit hangs through to the finish, though. Rating: 7/10
Mountjoy Natureberry CBD Sparkling Water – What is a natureberry? Per the company, it’s a “Mountjoy original, led by a hint of cranberry and balanced by extracts of select herbs.” It’s definitely more nature than berry (I barely get any cranberry at all), with a significant and savory herbal punch on the palate. Almost like a lemongrass note, which can be good or bad depending on what you’re noshing on on the side. Rating: 6/10
Mountjoy Lemon Lime CBD Sparkling Water – A classic flavor for sparkling water, but here the flavor is muted, tending more toward a light lime leaf than the sweet fruitiness you expect from, say, a can of Sprite. One of the simplest and most innocuous beverages in the lineup. Rating: 7/10
Mountjoy Black Cherry CBD Sparkling Water – Probably the most strongly-flavored water in the lineup, and the black cherry note isn’t bad. There’s plenty of terpene funk underneath on this one, sometimes a bit thick on the finish. Rating: 7/10
