Wondering how much CBD to take? If you’re just starting out with CBD products, determining the right amount to take can be confusing. We asked Chris Adlakha, PharmD, of Elevated Wellness, about what the ideal CBD dosage is. Here are his thoughts.
Q: What are your recommendations for consumers to determine their appropriate dosage of CBD?
A: There are no regulated guidelines for CBD dosing although it is recommended to start at lower doses (i.e. 10-25mg) and then dose up slowly to find the “sweet spot”. Everyone’s body composition and sensitivities to cannabinoids can be very different from one another.
Q: What’s the average CBD dose?
A: There isn’t necessarily an average dose, however it seems that many CBD products range around 25mg for an average dose. Finding the right dose is very important — taking too little will have no effect and taking too much could have an adverse effect. Your body composition is the most important determinant of what dose will work best. Severity of the condition will require more or less of a dose to achieve relief.
Q: What do you recommend the dosing be for conditions like anxiety, chronic pain, and sleep?
A: It really all depends on body composition. I can speak for the cases that I see in my day-to-day work day. Typically when talking about anxiety or stress, people tend to lean toward the lower doses. You can always go up but you can’t go down. For chronic pain, the severity of the condition will dictate this. For instance, people with minor back pain tend to lean toward medium to higher doses like 75mg-150mg while people with severe back pain may want to take 200+. For the most part, individuals using CBD for sleep are typically taking medium-high doses (75mg-100mg).
Q: What’s your advice for consumers starting a CBD regime?
A: Make sure to check where the CBD comes from and make sure the product has been third party tested to ensure little to no impurities exist. Ask to see a copy of the Certificate of Analysis.
